Window & Wall Treatments (continued)

3.     Consider the following sources for wallpaper.

a.  Many wallpaper stores and home improvement centers will stock a limited number of wallpaper designs for immediate purchase. Sometimes, particularly at the home improvement centers, prices will be less expensive than ordering wallpaper from a sample book.

b.  Most shops selling wallpaper for order will provide automatic discounts from the list price for the paper published in the wallpaper book.  These generally range from 20%-40%.  Once you find that perfect wallpaper, make sure to check at other wallpaper stores, including home improvement centers like Lowe’s and Home Depot, to see if they have the same wallpaper with a larger discount.  Most of these stores will also have professional installers available if you want someone else to hang the wallpaper.

c.  There are also many Internet-based companies that sell thousands of styles of wallpaper, often at prices substantially less than retail wallpaper outlets.  While it is difficult to pick wallpaper from a picture on your computer screen, if you have already located your wallpaper of choice at a retail store, just copy down the information and you will have no problem finding it for sale on the Internet.  Find your best price among the different web sites and your are good to go.

Carpet, Rugs & Flooring

If you are in the market for carpet, rugs or flooring materials, consider the following ideas to save.

1.     Save on carpet in the following ways.

a.  Look for sales at your local carpet shops and always ask for a discount, particularly if you are making a large purchase.  Try not to get talked into a more expensive grade of carpet than you really need.

b.  Look for carpet at home improvement centers like Lowe’s and Home Depot.  Their prices are often better than carpet stores, although their selection is most likely more limited.

c.  If you already have good carpet, but it has a localized stain that will not come out, consider having the carpet patched by a professional carpet installer, instead of replacing the entire carpet.  However, you will need a remnant of the original carpet to use for the patch.  If this is not available, you might consider taking it out of matching carpet that is in a closet.  In any case, if a piece of carpet is available for the patch, call up a carpet company and ask for an installer that is good at patches. If they know what they are doing, the patch will almost be unnoticeable, and the cost for the installer will be reasonable.

d.  If you are replacing carpet in a room because of staining or wear in one area, consider if the “old” carpet can be used in another room.  For a relatively modest charge, the installer of your new carpet will install the old carpet in another room.  If the room is smaller, it may be that the bad area of the old carpet can be cut away, and the remaining good carpet will work just great in the new room.  Or, perhaps, the bad area of the old carpet will be under the sofa or bed in the new room and not be visible.  In either case, you will now have good looking carpet in two rooms for not much more than the price of carpeting one room.

e.  If your old carpet left over after re-carpeting a room does not fit into another room, and it is still in good shape, consider having it cut to size and getting the edges bound so it can be used as an area rug.

f.   When installing new carpet, do not assume that you also have to install new padding.  If the existing padding under the new carpet is in good shape (and often it is) it can be reused with no problem.  This will save on both materials and labor cost.

2.     Rugs for use over tile and hardwood floors used to be quite expensive, and in many cases still are.  But it is no longer necessary to spend an “arm and a leg” for a nice rug. There are now retail outlets that have brought down prices to reasonable levels.  Both Lowe’s and Home Depot carry a relatively large selection of quality rugs in all different styles, shapes and sizes.  Some are available for take home, and others must be ordered.  Some specialty rug shops now have reasonable prices, but many are still outrageously priced. Shop around.  Home goods stores like Linens N Things and Bed Bath & Beyond may also have a rug you would like.  Discount stores like Marshall’s, etc. also carry rugs.   And, of course, Wal-Mart and Target have a limited selection.  You might even consider antique and thrift shops, flea markets, and garage sales.  You never know when you might find a good bargain on a rug. Just do yourself a favor and remember that rugs can now be bought at decent prices.  Don’t spend a lot.

3.     The best retail prices for ceramic tile and hardwood flooring materials are generally at stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot.  They have a decent selection on hand at competitive prices.  If you are looking for a larger selection, try contacting some wholesale distributors in your area.  These distributors will generally have an extensive selection and will sell to the public.  Pricing can be better than at your local retail flooring store.  They will probably also have a list of installers that you can consider.  Otherwise, your best bet for getting a good price on flooring materials and perhaps installation is to wait for a sale at a local flooring store.  They are usually held regularly and that is the time to buy.  But wherever you buy, make sure you buy a bit extra in case repairs are required in the future.  Trying to match tile and hardwoods that have been discontinued, or even from just a different batch or lot, can be difficult or nearly impossible to do.
