Accessories (continued)

a.  Specialty “discount” stores like Marshalls, Kirkland’s, Tuesday Morning, etc. often have really nice accessories at discount prices.  It is just a matter of continuously looking until you find that perfect accessory. Selections are always changing so check back often.

b.  Wal-Mart, Target and other discount department stores also carry some nice accessories.  While some of the items may not be right for you, others may be just perfect and available at a low price.

c.  Home improvement centers, like Lowe’s and Home Depot, can be a great place to purchase lighting fixtures, ceiling fans and even lamps. Sometimes, they even offer mirrors that may be ideal for your home.  Their prices are generally hard to beat on these items.  Watch for sales.

d.  Antique shops, flea markets and craft shows may also have a myriad of accessories for your home.  Sometimes prices and quality are very reasonable, and sometimes they are not.  Make sure you bargain for a better price.  And check carefully before you purchase, because returns are either not allowed or not possible, as is the case with traveling craft shows.

e.  Thrift stores and yard sales can also be a great place to shop for accessories.  You never know what you might find.

Window & Wall Treatments

Shades, blinds, shutters, and drapes can be incredibly expensive. Wallpaper, which can make a home more a reflection of your personality, can also become a very expensive proposition.  But there are ways to reduce cost.

1.     Consider the following sources for shades, blinds and shutters.

a.  For standard shades and blinds, for standard sized windows, it is hard to beat the prices available at Wal-Mart, Target and other discount department stores.  If you just want something to cover your windows these are the places to go.

b.  If your windows are not standard size, or you want something a little nicer, try the major home improvement stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot. Standard sized and quality shades and blinds are available for immediate purchase in the store.  But you can also custom order blinds and shutters if desired.

c.  Blinds, shades and shutters can also be ordered from many companies available locally.  These companies will come to your home, show you many options and measure for exact fit.  They will also install your order when it arrives.  While not inexpensive, they do have products available that will not “break the bank” and may even be as affordable as some of the special orders available at home improvement stores.

d.  J.C. Penney also sells some shades, blinds and shutters, both in-store and in their catalog.  If they are having a big sale, sometimes prices can be very attractive.  Look for sales and see if it’s your best deal.  Always ask the sales clerk when their next sale is to see if you can save even more.  If you do order from the catalog, you can usually save any shipping charges if you are willing to pick your order up at the store.

2.     Consider the following sources for curtains and drapes.

a.  Wal-Mart, Target and other discount department stores, as well as Lowe’s carry a limited selection of pre-made curtains and drapes.  If you get lucky and find something you like, these stores will provide your best savings.

b.  Specialty “discount” stores like Marshalls, Tuesday Morning, etc. often have pre-made curtains and drapes for sale at discount prices.  It is just a matter of continuously looking until you find what you want.  Selections are always changing so check back often.

c.  J.C. Penney, Linens N Things, Bed Bath & Beyond and other home goods stores also carry pre-made drapes.  Their selection will often be more extensive than discount department stores and home improvement stores, but prices are generally higher.

d.  If you cannot find pre-made curtains and drapes, made-to-order will probably be necessary.  Custom drape stores and vendors are usually outrageously priced.  Unless you purchase them during a great sale, there are other more economical ways to purchase custom-made drapes.  J.C. Penney will often hold good sales for custom-made drapes where prices are not too outrageous.

e.  An alternative to a custom drape company is purchasing the material you want for your drapes and having them tailored by a local seamstress. This is a relatively easy thing to do.  Just visit stores that sell fabric and decide what fabric is right for you.  Many of these stores also have examples of different curtain and drapery designs that you can consider. These stores also usually have a list of local seamstresses that they will recommend.  Just contact a few seamstresses and arrange for a meeting to decide if their capabilities and price will work for you.  Make sure to get references before you make a final decision.  The seamstress will use your window measurements to tell you how much fabric you need to purchase.  If you locate a good seamstress, the whole process is quite easy, and will probably be a lot less expensive than purchasing the exact same draperies from a custom-made drapery company.  Of course, if you are lucky enough that the local seamstress is you or a family member or good friend, you will probably get the absolute best price possible.
